This is the largest outbreak of monkeypox ever recorded outside of Africa.

Since the beginning of this month, health authorities in countries as diverse as Europe to Canada, the United States and Australia have begun detecting cases of this strange disease, whose previous outbreaks were very limited.

In recent years, non-African cases have only been detected in the USA, Israel, the UK and Singapore (although this does not mean that they do not occur in other countries where epidemiological detection systems are less developed).

However, in recent weeks, outbreaks have been increasing in health institutions to start to alarm.

  • Monkeypox vaccine and other factors not to worry about the current epidemic
  • Monkeypox: different from the devastating smallpox that was eradicated 40 years ago

However, various epidemiological surveillance institutions and experts, although current cases and their mode of transmission are still being studied, monkeypox is not a health threat to the general public.

However, it is the first time that so many countries in the world have detected new cases at the same time in the same time frame, and many of them have no visible connection or travel history to Africa.

Because it is a known disease, health centers in many countries have long-standing protocols to prevent infection, detect symptoms, and recommend treatment.

Here we tell you some keys to how you can prevent monkeypox and avoid getting infected.

Watch out for possible symptoms

The health authorities of many countries, including several Latin American countries, have been put on alert to quickly detect any possible cases of monkeypox in order to offer treatment, trace contacts and prevent the spread of the virus.

To do this, health agencies have advised their populations to watch out for symptoms and to see a doctor if they are suspected of being infected, especially if you have traveled in the past three weeks (the incubation period of the disease).

The UK Health Safety Agency (Ukhsa) points out that initially the symptoms of the illness are often similar to those of the flu and include:

  • fire
  • headache
  • muscle pains
  • Back pain
  • trembling trembling
  • tiredness
  • swollen lymph nodes

The most characteristic symptom occurs 1 to 5 days after the fever: a rash develops, which usually starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, especially the hands and feet.

In the majority of existing cases, people have reported the appearance of a rash in the genital area.

Such bubbles vary in appearance and pass through different stages before eventually forming a crust and then fall off.

If a person has such rashes, they should go to the doctor and isolate themselves so as not to infect others.

Being alert to symptoms is key because, unlike monkeypox, covid, I do not know to forward before people develop symptoms.

The Cleveland Clinic explains that one person can infect another until all the crusts have fallen off and there is no intact skin underneath.

Avoid close contacts

In the UK, where the largest number of cases have ever been reported, authorities are investigating as a model that most patients are men who have had sex with other men.

While there are some theories that the virus has mutated and can now be transmitted sexually, British epidemiologists and virologists eventually believe this is due to continued transmission of the virus in an already known way: close skin to skin contact.

Therefore, the British health agency decided to contact clinics dealing with LGBTI individuals to warn these potential risk groups associated with the spread of monkeypox through close contact.

Susan Hopkins, Ukhsa’s chief medical adviser, states that one of the measures to be taken is that monitor the appearance of skin lesions.

“We urge men who are gay and bisexual and are aware of any unusual rash or lesions to seek sexual health care without delay if they have concerns,” she said.

GETTY IMAGES is one of approximately 20 patients infected with monkeypox in the United States in 2003, when the first cases were reported in the United States.

British LGBTI organizations recommended that people be aware of any rashes in their potential sexual partners and openly discuss this new disease and its symptoms in case of a chance encounter.

Potential transmission from one person to another it doesn’t happen because Communication during sex.

Ukhsa explains that spreading can happen by any means:

  • contact with clothing (including bedding or towels) worn by an infected person
  • direct contact with lesions or crusts on the patient’s skin
  • coughing or sneezing by an infected person

For this reason, health officials recommend that you avoid close contact and wear clothing with people who may be sick, and isolate yourself if you have symptoms and wash all clothing, including towels and sheets, after you recover.

Likewise, they recommend using disposable tissues when coughing and sneezing, and avoiding doing it with other people nearby if possible.

Hygiene and other care

In this sense, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminds that washing your hands is still a decisive action against this virus.

“Practice good hand hygiene after contact with infected animals or people. Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer,” says the CDC.

Cleveland Clinic, Africa has become more common in childrentherefore parents should apply this care to minors as well.

UKHSA The rash changes and goes through different stages and may resemble chickenpox or syphilis before eventually forming a crust and then subside.

Although not yet detected in animals, other outbreaks of monkeypox have occurred in some species transported from Africa.

For this reason, the Cleveland Clinic usually recommends: Thoroughly cook all foods containing meat or animal parts.

Some public health experts also recommended that international travelers heed the advice of local authorities and follow their instructions and protocols, if any, to avoid potential contamination.

If you work with infected people in hospitals, clinics, or health centers, the CDC recommends using personal protective equipment.
