One of the demo videos that Google shared to show off the capabilities of its latest Gemini model doesn’t seem to be entirely authentic.

Google on Wednesday evening announced Gemini, the most powerful language model to date to emerge from DeepMind’s labs. With Gemini, Google finally wants to compete again in the AI ​​race together with OpenAI. With the announcement, Google also released a few videos to demonstrate Gemini’s multimodal capabilities.

One video in particular caused a stir. We see a Google employee playing a series of games with Gemini. The AI ​​switches effortlessly between text, voice, images and audio and it feels like a natural interaction between humans and artificial intelligence. Although this video doesn’t seem to be entirely authentic, Bloomberg noted.

Creative editing work

In the video’s description, Google itself actually notes that some creative editing work was required. “For this demo, latency was reduced and Gemini outputs were shortened.”, It is reading. In other words, Google gives the impression that Gemini responds much more quickly and succinctly than it actually does.

But the nature of the conversation itself was also tinkered with. Google admits to Bloomberg that the demo was not filmed in real time, but was created by stitching together still images and then adding text prompts to which Gemini responded. “This is a far cry from what Google seemed to suggest: that a person could have a fluent voice conversation with twins as they observed and responded to the world around them in real time,” journalist Parmy Olson writes in the commentary.

Live is rarely live

Google bites back through social media. DeepMind researcher Orial Vinyals writes on X that all of Gemini’s prompts and responses are 100 percent real and that the video was created to inspire developers. It is not at all unusual for a demo video to be staged. Demonstrations during press conferences or conference keynotes rarely or never take place “live”, companies don’t want to leave anything to chance.

Google itself has experience with this. Bard’s launch went completely wrong in February. Google obviously doesn’t want to make that mistake again. It now increases the pressure on Gemini to keep the beautiful promises.
