OAS condemns ‘coup attempt’ in Guatemala

Organization of American StatesOAS) condemned “Coup attempt” in Guatemalaafter prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office (MP) stated that they should annul the presidential election this year, where an anti-corruption candidate was elected Bernardo Arevalo.

Prosecutors for the two lawmakers previously said they would try to overturn the results of the first June round, which was won by former first lady Sandra Torres and Arevalo.

Then, Arevalo won the August runoff.

Since then, the deputy has carried out raids on Arevalo’s party officesSemilla and the TSE Electoral Tribunal in its efforts to investigate the elections.

He also asked lifting the immunity of deputies close to the elected president.

Prosecutors allege voter registration irregularities

Prosecutors allege irregularities in voter registration ahead of the election.

The international community has sharply criticized the investigation, calling it an attempt to prevent Arevalo from taking power in January.

“The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States condemns the coup attempt carried out by the Guatemalan State Ministry,” the OAS statement said.

The attempt to annul this year’s general elections represents the worst form of democratic breakdown and the consolidation of political fraud against the will of the people.

Four of the five TSE judges fled the country

The case will have to be heard by the TSE, which is expected to rule on the matter later on Friday.

Recently, four of the five TSE judges left the country after being deprived of immunity in connection with this case.

The measures against Arevalo, his party and the TSE sparked protests in various parts of Guatemala and a political crisis that has worsened in recent months. (Reuters)
