On December 9, Chinese private space company LandSpace Technology successfully launched three satellites into space for the first time using the Zhuque-2 Y-3 launch vehicle (Zhuque-2 Y-3), which uses methane and liquid oxygen instead of fuel.
According to Ukrinform’s report, LandSpace Technology reports this on its website.
The rocket took off from the Jiuquan Cosmodrome in northwestern China at 7.39 am local time (1.39 am Kiev time). This launch was the third of the Zhuque-2 rockets and the first to successfully launch satellites.
The rocket reportedly launched the Honghu, Honghu-2 and TY-33 spacecraft into Earth orbit at an altitude of 460 km. Data on their technical characteristics, equipment and purposes are not provided.
The company emphasized that today’s launch is an important launch within the framework of the Zhuque-2 series launch vehicle tests, in which methane and liquid oxygen are used as fuel. Developers believe methane will help reduce space launch costs and help run rockets that can be reused for commercial purposes more ecologically and efficiently.
The company conducted an earlier successful test of Zhuque-2 in July, becoming the first developer in the world to launch a methane-powered rocket, beating rivals in China and the United States.
LandSpace says the two most recent launches show that Zhuque-2 is reliable enough for commercial launches.
To date, many private Chinese rocket startups have developed their own launch vehicles and conducted test launches, but only LandSpace has succeeded in launching rockets with satellites.
The launch weight of the Zhuque-2 rocket is 216 tons and it uses TQ-12 metalox engines powered by methane and liquid oxygen. It is capable of launching a payload weighing up to 1.5 tonnes into an orbit at an altitude of 500 km, which LandSpace plans to increase to 4 tonnes in upgraded versions.
The main purpose of the Zhuque-2 carriers is to launch commercial satellites for various purposes into Earth orbit.
As Ukrinform reported, SpaceX launched 22 more Starlink internet satellites into orbit on December 8.
