Approximately one million boys and girls were “displaced” “from their homes” in the Gaza Strip, from where they are “now being pushed out” into overcrowded and underserved areas

Approximately one million boys and girls were “displaced” “from their homes” in the Gaza Strip, from where they are “now being pushed out” into overcrowded and underserved areas in the southern part of the enclave in the face of a furious Israeli offensivel, UNICEF condemned.

“Around a million children have been forcibly displaced from their homes. “They are now driven further south into tiny, overcrowded areas without water, food or protection,” Adele Khodr, UNICEF’s director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement.

According to the official in charge, such conditions put these children at “great risk” of contracting respiratory infections and waterborne diseases, and “their lives are further endangered” dehydration, malnutrition and disease.

“Every day, dozens of children die or are injured.”

“The Gaza Strip is the most dangerous place in the world to be a child,” Khodr recalled, adding that “dozens of children are dying or injured every day,” according to reports received by the UN agency.

Children without limbs and third degree burns

Likewise, he noted that UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations have been “raising the alarm for weeks” about dire conditions in the Palestinian enclave, where UN agency teams have seen children missing limbs and suffering third-degree burns caused by incessant Israeli bombing.

He also denounced “the restrictions and challenges associated with the delivery of life-saving aid” and said the volumes of humanitarian aid entering the enclave were “totally inadequate to the level of need.”

“The humanitarian system is collapsing, especially in the context of extreme tensions caused by post-ceasefire measures, and the population is sinking further into despair,” the UNICEF chief lamented.

Since the outbreak of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7, at least 17,620 people died More than 46,700 more people were injured, according to Gaza’s health ministry. (EFE)
