Huge skull of a prehistoric predator found

According to BBC News, the skull of an ancient sea creature, the “most predatory animal of the ocean”, was discovered on the famous Jurassic Coast, which is on the World Heritage list in the south of England. A huge fossil found in Dorset is about two meters long. It belonged to a pliosaur, an extinct marine reptile that terrorized the oceans from the Early Jurassic to the Early Late Cretaceous about 150 million years ago.

The ancient pliosaur was the “ultimate killing machine” that could move at high speeds across the ocean and kill its prey with a single bite. The skull has 130 long, razor-sharp teeth. There are thin protrusions on the back of each fang to quickly pull the victim’s flesh and prepare for a quick second attack.

Its prey were dolphin-like creatures and other pliosaurs, scientists told the BBC. Pliosaurs had jaws that were twice as strong as those of modern marine crocodiles.

“The animal was so big that I think it could have effectively hunted anything it could reach,” paleobiologist Andre Rowe from the University of Bristol told BBC News.

The creatures were 32-39 feet long and moved quickly with the help of four powerful fin-like limbs.

“I have no doubt that this is something similar to an underwater T. rex,” Rowe said.

The revolutionary discovery was made while fossil enthusiast Phil Jacobs was walking on a beach on the south coast of England. He came across the tip of the pliosaur’s nose extending between the pebbles.

The massive head was found on a nearby rock using a drone. Paleontologists had to climb down the hill during a complex operation to extract the surprising fossil. The fossil found will be featured in a David Attenborough special on BBC One in the new year. It is unique and respected in the scientific community because it is complete and robust.
