Apple appears to be moving away from Europe by giving rivals access to its NFC technology in iPhone devices to also offer “tap and pay.”

The European Commission has been investigating Apple Pay in an antitrust case since 2020. In 2022, Apple was officially notified of the anti-competitive practice and abuse of its market dominance for mobile payments in iOS.

According to Reuters, Apple appears to be heading towards Europe. The investigation is ongoing, but consideration is being given to opening NFC technology to external parties. In doing so, Apple wants to avoid a potentially high fine and complete the investigation.

There is a good chance that the European Commission will announce whether it accepts this offer next month. There are more than 2,500 banks in Europe that use Apple Pay because there is no other alternative on iOS.
