Zara faces boycott calls after launching it advertising campaign called “Jacket”which is accused of imitating what happened in the Gaza Strip due to the war between Hamas and Israel.

The Spanish multinational received the first complaints from UK consumerswho, having seen photographs on social networks, connected these scenes with what was happening in the Middle East and accused Zara of mocking the dead in the Gaza Strip.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it had received more than 50 complaints about the campaign.

Advertising photographs show a model holding a mannequin wrapped in what appears to be white plasticin the background there is a discarded tree, stones, garbage, a suitcase and several incomplete mannequins.

Social networks reported that the indoor mannequin imitates a traditional “Muslim funeral cloth.” In addition, they highlight that a hole appears in the cardboard in the background, similar to the silhouette of an upside-down map of Palestine.

The protests were not limited to whites.

Zara regrets the misunderstanding

On Tuesday, Zara announced that it had already removed the “The Jacket” campaign from its social media to don’t offend anyone.

“The campaign that was conceived in July and photographed in Septemberpresents a series of images of unfinished sculptures in a sculptor’s studio and was created with the sole purpose of showing artisan clothing in an artistic context,” Zara said in a statement on its Instagram account.

The company adds that “Unfortunately” Some clients were offended because they saw in these images “something very far from what was intended when they were created.”

Notification does not apply to the war between Israel and Hamas in Gazabut if we mention the dates on which the questionable images were created and photographed, it becomes clear that this was before the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas after the attack carried out on October 7th on Israeli territory by the armed wing of the Islamist movement.

Despite the explanation, many comments on social media continue to claim that the images resemble those killed in the Gaza Strip after the Israeli bombing that followed the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7.

Some users called for a boycott of the products of the Spanish brand, part of the Inditex group.

Last November IBritish company Marks & Spencer The Christmas advert had to be withdrawn after the ASA received 116 complaints, including over its alleged links to the conflict.
