The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.

Egypt and Mauritania formally requested an emergency meeting of member states, citing resolution 377A.

Dennis Francis, President of the General Assembly session, called on countries to support this ceasefire:

The vote ended with 153 votes in favor, 23 abstentions and ten votes against.

Israel, Guatemala, the Czech Republic, Austria, Liberia, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and the United States voted against.

Mexico voted for a ceasefire.

The text “reiterates the requirement that all parties comply with their obligations under international law” regarding the protection of civilians.

It also demands the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

This came after the United States vetoed a resolution presented to the UN Security Council calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, thereby warning about the situation in the Middle East and calling on the body to “pressure to” avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
