Google launches Gemini Pro. This is a variant of the Gemini model that the company introduced last week. Gemini, in turn, is Google’s answer to OpenAI’s GPT 4. It Great language model (LLM) was born in the Deepmind lab and supports ChatGPT competitor Bard. There will also be a Nano version for the smartphone.

Available for free

The search giant revealed the existence of Gemini Pro last week, but now the AI model is also available. With Gemini pro, Google is targeting companies and developers who want to use the intelligence of the LLM for their own applications. The AI model is accessible via an API via Google AI Studio.

In the Google AI Studio, developers can create free API keys using their Google account and start building functionality immediately. The free version is currently limited to 60 requests per minute, which is more than the competition. You connect to the Gemini Pro API via AI Studio and can then copy the code to your preferred IDA.

Currently, Gemini Pro supports 38 languages in more than 180 countries worldwide. The model initially works exclusively with text as input and output. Google is also now launching an image-focused variant: Gemini pro Vision, also accessible via the AI Studio. You can use this to send multimodal requests.

Vertex and Duet AI

Gemini is also available through Vertex AI. There you can customize the model with your own company data and link it to real-time data. Google also offers a low-code/no-code environment for developing applications. The company insists that it does not use data from Google Cloud customers to train its models and that the data you use to optimize Gemini belongs to you.

Gemini Pro is also available for free via Vertex for now, just like Gemini Vision Pro. This will change early next year and Google will charge $0.00025 per 1,000 characters input and $0.0025 per image. In all cases, the output is in text form and costs $0.0005 per 1,000 characters. Google says this competitive pricing is made possible by query acceleration through its homegrown TPUs.

Google also announced that Duet AI is generally available for developers and for SecOps. Duet AI will also be equipped with the smarter Gemini model in the coming weeks.
