Anna Zakharash, director of corporate communications of the Kyivstar company, reported on the broadcast of the channel “Kyiv24” that the company managed to partially restore fixed Internet. Experts are also making efforts to fully restore the network.

He also stated that international companies such as Microsoft, Cisco and Ericsson also helped Kyivstar.

What is known about the massive failure of Kyivstar

  • On the morning of December 12, Ukrainians began to complain about a malfunction in the Kyivstar network. The company reported a major malfunction and Ukrainians were advised to use the “National Roaming” service.
  • The reason for the large-scale failure was a hacker attack. The Russian Sontsepok group claimed responsibility for the attack on Kievstar.
  • The failure of the network was felt not only by smartphone users, but also by other structures. In particular, in Sumy, due to a malfunction, Kyivstar employees had to manually turn off street lighting, which affected the operation of more than 300 substations. In Chernivtsi, there were problems with paying fares on public transport due to a malfunction in the Kyivstar network. In Dnipro, bank terminals did not work, and in Rivne, the city council’s helpline was out of service.
  • The network reported that subscribers’ personal data was allegedly leaked due to a hacker attack. The company stated that such information is not accurate. They added that the systems where this data was stored were not affected by the hacker attack and that the personal data of Ukrainians was safe.
