After the trademarks Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel were registered in South Korea, they also appeared on the EUIPO European Trademark List website. The two patents are accompanied by a small statement confirming that this is an OLED display for smartphones, AR devices and other large displays.

These look like OLED displays for video monitors, TVs, smartphones, wearables, smart glasses, augmented reality glasses, and tablet monitors. More importantly, it’s labeled as “expandable display for smartphones” and “watch-shaped smartphones.” According to the statement, we are very close to the mass availability of expandable display technology.

We have already seen a few designs, including the Flex Note device that was introduced last year at the SID 2022 Display Week in San Jose, California, USA. Another Samsung Flex Gaming portable device concept was introduced at CES 2023. Employees demonstrated a foldable display with a peripheral controller.

The appearance of the Flex Magic Pixel and Flex Magic trademarks at EUIPO and the South Korean Certification Agency confirms something special about the expandable display in 2024. AR products are already in the pipeline, but a new smartphone could be closer to reality.

There may be a variety of use cases for such expandable displays because they can replace the standard form factor of various electronic devices. This could be a real evolution, especially for smartphones.
