Federal judge decided suspend the trial from election interference against former President Donald Trump, an appeal filed by a Republican to dismiss the case is pending.
Judge Tanya Chutkan decided to suspend all proceedingsAccording to local media, after the tycoon’s lawyers last week appealed the decision to refuse to dismiss the case against the former president.
Trump argues that the 2020 election interference case cannot proceed because he actions were protected by presidential immunityBetween other reasons.
Despite the pause in legal proceedings, Chutkan noted that measures remain in force which have been adopted to ensure the “integrity” of the process, such as “gag order” which he imposed on Trump to prevent him from making certain comments on the matter.
Chutkan added that as the D.C. Court of Appeals is now considering whether Donald Trump can be tried, the trial of the former president beginsscheduled for March 4, 2024, may be affected.
On December 7, Trump’s lawyers filed an appeal to that court against Chutkan’s decision to find that the Republican did not have presidential immunity for interfering in the 2020 election, which Democrat Joe Biden won.
Following a maneuver by Trump’s legal team, the special counsel investigating the former US president’s attempts to overturn the results of that election. Jack Smith asked the Supreme Court on Monday to rule on his presidential immunity.
With this decision, which will superimpose the decision of the Court of Appeal, Smith intends to expedite the resolution of the dispute and avoid delays in the commencement of proceedings.
The former president faces four charges of conspiracy against the United States; for preventing Congress from certifying the election results; for conspiracy against the right to vote, and for attempting to prevent the certification of the records.
The tycoon pleaded not guilty to four federal charges last August. Prosecutors allege Trump manipulated protesters into believing then-Vice President Mike Pence could change the election results, ultimately leading to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
Trump also faces another trial, led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, for election interference in Georgia during the 2020 election, in which he faces 13 state charges. (EFE and Europa Press)
