In January, Japan’s Honda will stop production of Honda e models, the company’s first electric car.
Asahi Shimbun reported this, as reported by Ukrinform.
According to the company, sales of the Honda e will stop as soon as stocks of this model’s electric vehicles run out.
It was stated that Honda e’s sales slowed down after losing its competitive advantage amid the intensifying struggle in the electric car market.
This compact 4-seat electric car was launched in Europe in September 2020 and in Japan in October 2020.
The company has tried to meet “second car” demand, but sales have slowed due to the introduction of cheaper, longer-range electric vehicles from other manufacturers.
While the initial annual sales plan was for 10,000 units in Europe and 1,000 in Japan, cumulative global sales over nearly three years amounted to 11,987 units.
According to the automaker, the knowledge gained from the development of the Honda e will be used for the development and sales of electric vehicles in the future.
Honda plans to shift all new car sales to electric and fuel cell vehicles by 2040. The company plans to offer four models in Japan by 2026, starting with a commercial mini electric car to be launched next spring.
Electric car sales continue to grow worldwide, according to market research company Rho Motion, Ukrinform reported.
