Meta announced the launch of Threads in several European Union countries including Spain. The arrival of the social network comes five months after its international availability and after solving problems with compliance with digital market laws and data protection regulations in force on the old continent.
We guessed it a few days ago when we found a countdown timer on their website announcing their upcoming arrival in Europe. As you know, Meta (formerly Facebook) took advantage of the bad moments of Twitter (now X) and launched a new social network that they clearly wanted they take up space, users and revenue lost to the microblogging site after the acquisition of Elon Musk and his quirky management.
If weeks after launch. And if you’re looking for a real alternative to X, you should try Mastodon. This is true in the Twitter clone, but its operation is radically different because it is a decentralized network. More importantly, with your data away from the big platforms that want to do business.
Threads in Europe and Spain
That means you can now try it on the other side of the Atlantic. Threads allows access from your Instagram account (remember that it was originally intended as an Instagram feature) or use without linking and without creating a profile. In this mode, you will be able to explore the microblogging site, but you will not be able to publish or interact with content. It goes without saying that you can share content via links.

Since launch, Meta has improved the app with the launch of the web version; post editing; search and the possibility of tagging according to topics or feed users we track. Personally, I don’t see it adding anything new or interesting to what X has to offer, which doesn’t mean that Meta will eventually hit its stride and eventually surpass Musk’s network in terms of users. We insist, more because of the millions of users it has on other services like Instagram than because of its own capacity.
Along with the launch in Europe, Mark Zuckerberg announced the related news, which we think is the most interesting: ActivityPub support “we give people more ways to interact and help content reach more users”. This means interoperability with other compatible platforms, such as Mastodon, where Threads messages can be viewed and interacted with. Using a decentralized network is a big advantage over the centralized (and closed) X.
