“I think the cyber war (against Ukraine) started with the emergence of Ukraine and the emergence of the word ‘cyber’,” he said.

According to him, the word “cyber” did not exist in the 1990s, then there were computer attacks, and only later did it become the term “cyber”.

“As soon as the network began to be created, as soon as information began to appear in it, these network attacks immediately began. These were not attacks in terms of destroying the network. These were attacks from the perspective of the network. The deputy stated that he opened some “wormholes” just to gain access to information and the network.

The People’s Deputy noted that in this case the attacker usually does not aim to destroy this or that infrastructure.

“Why are you doing this? It’s better to control the infrastructure, to have information exposed in a certain closed environment so that it can then be managed somehow, etc.,” the parliamentarian explained.

Answering the question of how vulnerable Ukraine is in this regard and whether the Russians can, for example, remotely stop a nuclear power plant, “shut down” the energy industry or “break” the work of Ukrzaliznytsia, Fedienko expressed the following opinion: they could do it, they would have done it already.

“If we talk about nuclear energy, for example, they (NPP employees) have a perimeter without an Internet connection. They are in a protected circle. There are clear security rules. And of course (on this topic – ed. .) such objects also have a security perimeter . That is, if the accounting department has access to the Internet, then it is not connected, for example, to the general station control system,” said the chairman of the cybersecurity subcommittee of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense.
