On December 12, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, Kyivstar, suffered a cyber attack that lasted at least 48 hours and affected the company’s mobile and data services. As a result of the cyber attack, more than half of the Ukrainian population was deprived of mobile and internet connection. “Kyivstar” stated that customers’ personal data was not leaked.

This hacking attack disrupted air raid sirens, some banks, ATMs and shopping terminals. At the same time, “Monobank” became the target of a DDoS attack, which led to a breach of access to the bank’s website.

According to intelligence experts, “This incident is likely one of the most devastating cyberattacks on Ukrainian networks since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, as Ukraine’s state resources and emergency services were affected.”

As reported by Ukrinform, the Security Service of Ukraine has initiated a criminal case regarding the cyber attack on Kyivstar. One of the versions of the investigation involved the participation of Russian special services.

It was learned that Solntsepek, one of the so-called hacker groups of the Russian Federation, claimed responsibility for the attack on Kievstar on December 13.

The cyber attack on Kyivstar in the Verkhovna Rada was called one of the most powerful attacks in Europe in the history of all communications operators.
