If you don’t want to update Microsoft Teams, you will soon have problems. Microsoft is taking the outdated infrastructure offline, so old clients of the chat service will work less well.

Microsoft will take legacy infrastructure offline to support old versions of Teams. The move is planned for March 2024. If you still use an old Teams client, you will notice that messages arrive more slowly. Microsoft itself claims that updating its infrastructure will ensure greater security, reliability and robustness.

In October, Microsoft rolled out Teams 2.0 to everyone. This version of Teams looks the same, but has been rebuilt from the ground up. In this way, Microsoft wants to offer a more efficient and better optimized version of the software. The new client is based on WebView 2. This is said to be more economical and efficient than Electron, which served as the basis for the old client.

Since the end of March 2023, brave souls have been able to switch to the new version of Teams. Now Microsoft expects everyone to take the step gradually. Those left behind have until March 2024, but then Redmond will take the infrastructure that supports the old software offline, with noticeable consequences.
