Microsoft activates its own universal printer driver that updates itself in Windows 11. This is intended to make printing more secure.
The traditional printer driver is sent to the eternal hunting grounds. The latest Windows 11 Insider trial includes a new mode for safer printing. If you activate it, you can use the new modern one Print stack Use with a plug and play experience.
According to Microsoft, this is not only easier to use but also more secure than OEM drivers. Microsoft now has control over when a security vulnerability exists and how it can be closed. Now you often had to rely on external printer drivers from the manufacturer and how quickly they were updated, if at all.
Anyone who is a Windows Insider and is running a preview version of Windows 11 can try the new option today.
Step 1: Search for Group Policy in Windows 11
Open Explore and go to the C drive. Double-click the Windows folder, then the System32 folder and locate the gpedit file (not gpedit.dll). Double click on it to get that Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
Step 2: Customize Group Policy
Navigate to Computer configuration, Administrative templates and click on the folder Printer. Here you will find a line with Configure Windows Secure Printing. Double click on this line and select Enables top left. Confirm with OK.
From now on, Windows 11 is more secure again. There is an important note: the printer driver is currently only compatible with Mopria certified printers. HP, Brother, Canon or Epson have hundreds of compatible models.
Do you have a printer that is five or ten years old? Then, to be sure, check the product type to see if it is Mopria certified. If this is not the case, you will still need to install new drivers in the future. If they are already available, your printer may be posing a threat to your home network today and an upgrade is in order.
Microsoft plans to roll out this feature to all Windows 11 machines next year. If you are not yet a Windows insider or would rather not change the group policy, you will have to be patient.
