A Costa Rican court sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for… reassured elderly people to then defraud them and steal their assets, the Justice Department said Monday.
The sentence was handed down by the criminal court of the city of Desamparados in the southern sector of San José to a man named Traña Cerda, whom the court found guilty of committing four crimes aggravated robberyone for theft and two for fraud, most against elderly people.
“The accused contacted people through social media and made appointments with them. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, during the meetings the man took advantage of some moments to give victims lorazepam or benzodiazepines – drugs that cause a sedative effect,” the prosecutor’s office explained.
The prosecutor’s office explained that when the victims were sedatedTraña “took advantage of the opportunity to take over their assets.”
Prosecutors said Tranha seized three vehicles and approximately $100,000 worth of electronic items that mostly belonged to elderly people.
The events took place in 2022 in the city of Alajuela (center), as well as in the cities of Desamparados, Barrio Dent and San Pedro, located in the province of San José (center). EFE
