Google-owned Alphabet agreed to pay $700 million and increase competition in the Google Play app store under the terms of an antitrust settlement with US states and consumers.

This was reported by Reuters, as reported by Ukrinform.

Under the agreement, which still needs final approval from a federal court in San Francisco, the company will pay $630 million to a consumer settlement fund and $70 million to a fund to be used by states.

The agreement text also states that eligible users will receive at least $2 each and may receive additional payments based on their spending on Google Play between August 16, 2016 and September 30, 2023.

It was noted that all 50 states of the USA, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, participated in the lawsuit filed against Google.

Google has previously been accused of overcharging consumers due to illegal restrictions on app distribution on Android devices and unnecessary fees for in-app transactions.

The company did not admit guilt.

As reported by Ukrinform, Google announced that it will begin testing a new feature in its Chrome browser as part of its plan to ban third-party cookies that advertisers use to track consumers.
