IBM is acquiring two application integration platforms from Software AG for 2.13 billion euros: StreamSets and WebMethods.
A few months after the investment fund Silver Lake delisted the German Software AG for 2.4 billion euros, it sold the StreamSets and WebMethods applications to IBM for 2.13 billion euros. Given the small price difference, this suggests that both tools are Software AG’s crown jewels.
According to IBM, both application integration platforms are growing and profitable, with an installed base of more than 1,500 companies.
The start-up StreamSets was acquired by Software AG at the beginning of 2022. This is an iPaaS platform that helps companies move data between applications. The service supports various data transfer methods. For example, it can ingest data from a target system in real time as it is created or in batches later.
The second Software AG platform acquired by IBM, WebMethods, has been part of the company’s portfolio since 2007. This allows you to automatically transfer data between internal systems. At the time, Software AG paid $546 million for the company. Today they would be working on WebMethods AI to enable data between applications without having to write code.
IBM wants to use both platforms to expand the Watsonx product suite. You can already find tools there for building AI models or neural networks for tasks such as code generation.
According to IBM, the acquisition is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2024. Software AG remains active with smaller tools.
