Gaza Strip is the most dangerous place in the world to be a child: UNICEF

UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that Gaza Strip today became “The most dangerous place in the world for a boy or girl” as the Israeli army advances into the Palestinian enclave, which has already recorded more than 19,600 deaths.

UNICEF Representative, James ElderStatements from the organization’s headquarters in Geneva said the “harsh reality” of civilians in the area was “consolidating” as the conflict progressed.

James Elder, UNICEF Representative.

Elder, who stressed that Al Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis has been bombed twice in the past 48 hours, lamented that the center “not only houses a large number of boys and girls who have already been injured in attacks on their homes, but also against hundreds of women and children seeking safety.”

Where will the children and their families go? They are not safe in hospitals. They are not safe in shelters. And, of course, they are not safe in the so-called “safe zones.”

He said before explaining that there are no security guarantees in these areas because they were created “unilaterally” by Israeli forces.

In this sense, he emphasized that the UN had already made this recording about a month ago:

These zones cannot be safe or humanitarian if they are declared unilaterally. According to international humanitarian law, the place where people are evacuated must have sufficient resources for survival: medical facilities, food and water.

In addition, he explained that these areas are only safe “when they are free from bombing and these conditions are met.”

In the current conditions of siege, it is impossible to provide these areas with sufficient supplies. I have seen this reality myself.

Elder said the areas were “small patches of barren land, street corners or unfinished buildings, with no water, no amenities, no shelter from the cold and rain.” And without sewerage, it’s something vital.”

Disease and lack of sanitation

UN data shows that there is currently an average of one toilet for every 700 children and families in the Gaza Strip.

Without water, sanitation or shelter, these areas are disease zones.

“Cases of diarrhea among boys and girls exceed 100 thousand. The number of acute respiratory diseases among the adult population exceeds 150 thousand. Both figures will be much lower than the sad reality. With child malnutrition on the rise in Gaza, diarrheal diseases are becoming deadly,” he said.

Elder further noted that “in this scenario, without the water, food and sanitation that only a humanitarian ceasefire can provide, infant mortality due to disease could exceed that of the bombings” and “parents are painfully aware of this.”
