Japan is developing a train based on hydrogen fuel cells

Engineers of the Japanese Central Japan Railway company are developing a train powered by hydrogen fuel cells that has no carbon dioxide emissions.

This was reported by NHK, according to Ukrinform’s report.

On Monday, engineers tested the train on a railway line to see if it had enough power to move and accelerate.

Fuel cells produce electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen with oxygen. As a result, only water is formed. The train also runs on batteries.

The aim of the research is to develop hydrogen-powered trains to replace the diesel models currently in use, the company said.

Company representative Tanaka Hidemitsu emphasized that the use of diesel engines should be reduced to decarbonize the railway industry.

According to Ukrinform, the first hydrogen-powered train in North America started carrying passengers in Canada.
