As Ukrinform reports, Xinhua writes about this, citing NASA’s statement.
“NASA is preparing to launch a new mission that will explore interstellar space and help create a 3D map of the Milky Way,” the article states.
It was noted that the mission called “GUSTO” will be launched from the American research station in Antarctica on December 21 at the latest. “In the atmosphere above Antarctica, GUSTO, a balloon-borne telescope, will peer into the space between stars, called the ‘interstellar medium,'” Xinhua notes.
The telescope will allow scientists to create a three-dimensional map of a large part of the Milky Way with the help of ultra-high-frequency radio waves. “Exploring a region with a 100-degree viewing angle, GUSTO will study different phases of the interstellar medium and many chemical elements in the galaxy,” the agency explains.
Researchers hope that the data obtained will allow a better understanding of how galaxies develop.
