Nvidia will face competition from high-end AI accelerators in the market. After AMD, Intel also wants to join the fight. In 2024 we can expect a Gaudi3 accelerator that should give the company a place at the AI training table.

“In the next year or two you will see new players in the AI market,” HPE CEO Antonio Neri predicted earlier this month. His prophetic words quickly became reality with the introduction of AMD’s Instinct MI300 series. These accelerators should rival or even surpass the Nvidia Hopper H100 (although Nvidia denies this). Nvidia will have more competition next year. Ultimately, Intel also wants to enter the ring.

Intel’s champion is Gaudi3. This is a brand new accelerator planned for 2024. Currently, Intel doesn’t have much say in AI training. The company’s CPUs are a necessary component in servers with accelerators, but nothing more. Gaudi3 has to change that.A

Intel boss Pat Gelsinger makes no secret of his ambition to curb Nvidia’s dominance. “The entire industry wants to eliminate the CUDA market,” the man said recently. Intel wants to make a contribution with Gaudi3.

Unclear specifications

The accelerator is currently little more than a declaration of intent. We know very little about the chip that will replace Gaudi2. Rumors say that performance will increase by 50 percent, as will memory. Intel will probably choose HBM3 or HBM3e, but we can’t do more than speculate for now.

A competitive chip would be good news for the market. Because manufacturers cannot keep up with the enormous demand for powerful accelerators. AMD’s competition for Nvidia is only a partial solution, as both parties source production capacity from TSMC. Intel has its own factories and can theoretically have a significant influence on supply with Gaudi3.
