Russian court fines Google another $51 million

Moscow’s Tagansky Court fined Google 4.6 billion rubles ($51 million) for repeatedly failing to remove from YouTube materials containing information banned in Russia.

Radio Liberty reports this, Ukrinform reports.

According to the case materials, the reason for preparing the protocol against Google was the so-called “fake” videos about the Russian army, “LGBT propaganda” and “extremist materials”.

This is the third fine issued to the company for failure to remove materials. In December 2021, Google was fined 7.2 billion rubles, and in July 2022, a fine of 21.07 billion rubles.

As reported, on June 16, Google’s Russian “daughter” Google LLC filed an application for its own bankruptcy in the Moscow Arbitration Court.

The rule on recoverable fines appeared in Russian legislation in 2020. Punishment for repeated refusal to remove banned content was linked to blackmail. In other words, it constitutes a certain percentage of the company’s annual turnover.
