During archaeological work in the annex of the town hall of the city of Rostock (Germany’s federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), researchers found a remarkable lead fragment. However, it turned out to be a unique tablet from the 15th century, on which curses and demons were summoned.

The invocation of Satan and the demons Beelzebub and Berith is engraved in small letters on the work. Scientists managed to decipher the phrase “Sathanas taleke belzebuk hinrik berith.”

The curse was directed at a woman named Talek and someone named Hinrik (Henrich). Researchers assumed they were trying to send demons. The text also talks about unrequited love.

Local researcher Dr. Jörg Ansorge reminded that cursed tablets have been known since ancient times and were common in ancient Greece and Rome. But the new find, dated to the 15th century, has become unique as similar artifacts from the Middle Ages in Ansorzh are unknown.
