“Meta helps end Palestinian suffering”: HRW

Meta is silencing more and more pro-Palestine content in social networks Facebook And instagramcondemned this Thursday Human Rights Watch (HRW).

A human rights organization has published a report on “systematic censorship” from Mark Zuckerberg’s technology team regarding this content since the start of the Gaza war on October 7.

The report “documents a pattern deletion and deletion misuse of protected speech, including peaceful expression in support of Palestine and public debate about Palestinian human rights“.

HRW found “excessive use of automated content moderation tools and undue government influence to remove content” on both of Zuckerberg’s social networks.

“Meta helps reduce Palestinian suffering”

Deborah Brown, acting deputy director for technology and human rights at Human Rights Watch, said: “Social media is an important platform for people to bear witness and speak out against abuses, while Meta’s censorship helps erase Palestinian suffering.

The organization reviewed 1050 cases of online censorship in more than 60 countriesin which he identified six key patterns.

Types of censorship on Facebook and Instagram by Mark Zuckerberg

These removal of content, suspension or deletion of accountsinability to interact with content, inability to follow or tag accounts, restrictions on features such as Instagram and Facebook Live and shadowbanning, significant reduction in the visibility of posts or accounts.

According to HRW, in more than 300 cases, users were unable to file claims to have content or accounts removed because the mechanism for doing so did not work properly.

In hundreds of cases, Meta cited its “Dangerous Organizations and Individuals” policy, which includes lists of terrorist organizations developed in the United States, and “incorrectly applied its policies on violent content.”

Meta deleted reports of dead and wounded Palestinians

In addition to “inconsistently” enforcing its policies on relevant content, Human Rights Watch said it removed dozens of posts documenting newsworthy deaths and injuries among Palestinians.

“Meta must align its content moderation policies and practices with international human rights standards, ensuring that content removal decisions are transparent, consistent, and not overly broad or biased,” the organization said.

“It should start by reviewing its policies towards dangerous organizations and individuals to bring them into line with international human rights standards,” he added.

The organization also called on Mark Zuckerberg’s company to “review” its policies on relevant content to ensure it does not eliminate those that are of “public interest” and to “act with due caution regarding the human rights impact of temporary changes to its recommendation algorithms “, which it introduced after the start of Israel’s war against Hamas in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
