Nativity scenes are popular mainly in Catholic Italy, but in recent years they have become embroiled in culture wars. Society has become more secular and multicultural.
The parish priest of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Capocastello di Mercogliano, a village in the province of Avellino an hour’s drive east of Naples, defended the depiction of the birth of Jesus.
“With this scene, I wanted to show that families are no longer just traditional,” he said. Reuters Father Vitaliano Della Sala.
“In our parishes we see more and more children from new types of families who exist and are part of our society, children of separated and divorced people, homosexual couples, single women, young mothers“.
Della Sala, known for his sympathy for LGBT and left-wing movements, says his position is in line with that of Pope Francis, who this week took the historic step of allowing priests to bless gay couples.
However, Senator Maurizio Gasparri of the ruling Forza Italia party said the LGBT creed “offends all those who have always respected and devoted to the sacred family.”
The group Pro-Vita & Famiglia (Pro-Life and Family) called it “dangerous, as well as shameful and blasphemous.”
Pro-Vita, which launched an online petition calling on Bishop Avellino to intervene, argues that the nativity scene contradicts Church teaching on the family and legitimizes homosexual parenthood and surrogacy.
To date, the petition has received more than 21,000 signatures. (Reuters)
