In Shanghai, local police uncovered a major trade secret breach in chip technology; This led to the arrest of 14 suspects and the seizure of seven servers containing confidential information.

Chip technology scandal: Arrests and corporate denials of trade secret violations

The case involves Zunpai Communications, a company allegedly involved in the breach, and its founder and CEO Zhang Kun, who has been missing for several months. The technology is believed to belong to Huawei.

Amid the controversy, Xiaomi Corporation, a leading investor in Zunpai Communications, categorically denies any direct involvement in the breach. Xiaomi’s investment in Zunpai was part of its earlier funding round in May 2022.

However, the company announced that its subsidiary Hanxing Entrepreneurship Investment Co., Ltd. owns this stake. It made the investment not as a strategic corporate move but as a standard financial activity. Xiaomi has emphasized its position as one of many investors, including national and local government funds and more than 20 financial institutions, that do not have a significant stake or leadership role in the company being financed.

Additionally, the company said it does not participate in the management or operation of the agile company and does not support technology collaboration or information sharing with them. Xiaomi collected evidence to refute the allegations and reported it to the relevant authorities.

The investigation found that the violation involved former employees of the human rights company who were lured by high salaries and equity incentives. They were tasked with stealing chip technology from their former employers, resulting in the development of chips that were more than 90% similar in basic technical aspects. In Shanghai and Jiangsu, rapid police action disrupted the mass production of illegal chips.

The prime suspects, specifically Zhang and Liu, were charged with violating trade secrets, and others involved were released on bail. The extent of damage to the human rights company will be assessed based on the commercial value of the stolen trade secrets. Source
