It’s Christmas! And although we haven’t done it yet, it doesn’t hurt to do it again, the day goes by fast, so Merry Christmas! Bored? Lacking inspiration to find something to watch for lunch or dinner?
A good classic never disappoints, so I’ll recommend a few for you to check out streaming right now and whether you’re into this or that – action, comedy, adventure… – you’ll love them, not because I’m saying that, but because as good as the classics are, they’ve stood the test of time.
In fact, chances are you’ve seen the vast majority, if not all, of the movies on this list. But no problem: if it doesn’t help you discover anything, it can serve as a reminder. In any case, and without any order or concert, let’s do it.
We’ll start with the one that can’t be ignored, an adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. I think, A Christmas Story. But which of them all? The latest, released as a miniseries in 2019 and now collected in a single reproduction. Directed by: Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) and starring Guy Pearce (Time Machine) in the role of the eternal Mr. Scrooge is one of the most polished and with this beware, dark, that succeeded.
You can see it on Disney+.
Harry Potter, yes. But not just any, although any would do to fill the gap at Christmas. Specifically, the first Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, a modern classic of fantastic cinematography that, while not exactly Christmassy, ââbreathes Christmas from beginning to end. Because of the release dates, because the world invented by JK RFowling doesn’t like anyone who doesn’t want to spend Christmas at Hogwarts…
You can see it on HBO Max.
Another Christmas classic of family cinema is Home alone, and it is no coincidence that, as with the previous film, it was directed by Chris Columbus. In this case, yes, there is no magic beyond this data, but there are crazy situations that every kid will take advantage of… and speaking of fun, needless to say. A survival adventure for intrepid youngsters!
You can see it on Disney+.
Possible reassignment to a more active and mature terrain Crystal Jungle may be out of place for some, but nothing could be further from the truth. This action classic from the late eighties from the director of other cult pieces such as Predator, Hunt for Red October either The last great hero, starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman or Reginald Veljohnson, is simply another way to celebrate Christmas. More explosive.
You can see it on Disney+.
More gear, this Made in Spainis what we find Day of the beast, an absolute marvel of fantastic cinematography halfway between black comedy, mundane action and papier-mâchĂŠ horror in a film that made Ălex de la Iglesia famous, but also Santiago Segura. And Christmas is not only synonymous with reunion, peace, love and other stories…
You can see it on HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video.
And what can we say about the classic among the classics of satire, the most recognized work of the British comedy group Monty Python: Brian’s life, a parody of “the greatest story ever told,” was ahead of its time and doesn’t lose its luster no matter how many years pass. On the contrary, maybe yes. It’s incredible that it’s still as hilarious and biting today as it was forty years ago, and even though it’s not a Christmas movie by itselfâŚ
You can see it on Netflix.
Directed by Frank Capra (Arsenic out of compassion, It happened one night) and starring James Stewart (back window, Dizziness), Life is beautiful! It’s one of those Christmas movie classics that never goes out of style, even though it’s been almost eighty years since its release, which is said to be early. It is a drama with a subtext of fantastic cinematography, although it also has branches of comedy of manners; It is a family cinema that is not for all viewersâŚ
You can see it on Amazon Prime Video.
We’ve shifted gears to talk about a much more modern classic that you may have seen again recently, as the title suggests: The Nightmare Before Christmas. Yes, you can give it once Halloween is over, but it’s also an excellent Christmas option. A small work of art in Stop Motion written by the ineffable Tim Burton, which may have lost some of the aesthetic luster it had in its day, but has gained presence. This is HalloweenYes, but it also is Christmas.
You can see it on Disney+.
Grin, this polar opposite of Santa Claus or Santa Claus, as you like, has become one of the usual figures of Christmas fantasy and has accumulated various adaptations to his credit. Which one is the most interesting? As always, it’s up to you, but because of the type of story it tells, I think animation is particularly suited to it, and if I had to choose, I like Illumination Entertainment’s (2018) the best.
You can see it on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and SkyShowtime.
We’re finalizing the list and it’s only fair to do so Klaus, another animated film and the second Spanish production we collect. Whether it’s a classic is debatable, because while the story is 100% Christmas, it doesn’t reproduce it in the way it’s widely known, such as an adaptation A Christmas Story either Grin, which were also recently released. But believe me, if it’s not a classic, it will be.
You can see it on Netflix.
Finally, more A Christmas Story but in a modern version and in a comedic tone without losing the essence and message of the story in question. Directed by Richard Donner (superman, Goonies), played by Bill Murray (Ghost busters, Caught in time) and although Frank Cross is no Ebenezer Scrooge, everything else is there. It is, to tell the truth, a kinder way to come full circle or teach a lesson.
You can see it on SkyShowtime.
