The prison, located approximately 60 km north of Arctic circlewas founded in the 1960s as part of the former Soviet Gulag system of forced labor camps, according to the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.

“The conditions there are difficult, there is a special regime in the permafrost,” said Navalny’s assistant Leonid Volkov. He said he found it difficult to communicate with prisoners held in a remote location.
