Researchers from China’s Northwest Polytechnic University in Xi’an have created a device called a “golden screen” that can fool air defenses and disguise the missile as a plane.
The “golden curtain” is made of thin threads, intertwined like a web and covered with gold. Due to its complex geometry, it can reflect radar signals.
Laboratory tests showed that the device increased the radar cross-section of a flying target from 1 to 30 decibels per square meter. This is similar to the radar signature created by a large aircraft such as a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 when viewed from certain angles.
According to researchers, the new device differs from similar technologies with its high flexibility. It can be opened and closed many times according to the umbrella principle, and it is also made of cheap materials widely available in China.
The weight of the device is about one kilogram, which is much less than its counterparts. In this way, the missile can fly long distances or carry a larger warhead. The device can also be installed on military ships and land vehicles.
