WHO looks back at the historic year 2023 as the Covid-19 pandemic came to an end

Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusgave a relatively positive assessment on Tuesday “historic” 2023year since the organization declared the end of the international state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic in May.

“This marked a 180-degree turn in the world after three years of crisis, pain and loss around the world“He recalls his end-of-year message in which he said he was “glad life is back to normal.”

Tedros stressed that in 2023 the WHO will also end the health emergency due to MPOX (the name under which it has renamed monkeypox), although, as with Covid-19, this does not mean there will be no more infections will. in different countries. .

The WHO head also noted the approval this year of new vaccines against malaria, dengue and meningitisdiseases that threaten millions of vulnerable people around the world, while “the path to eradicating polio is already in its final stages.”

As for the negative part of the year, Tedros especially recalled the war between Israel and Hamas, during which hospitals and medical workers were subjected to numerous attacks, and many medical centers became real battlefields.

The WHO chief stressed that only a quarter of Gaza’s hospitals are still operating (9 out of 36), and He repeated his call for a ceasefire.

Tedros also recalled in his message the resurgence of cholera that the world is experiencing, with a record number of outbreaks around the planet – about 40.

By 2024, Tedros hopes to complete ongoing negotiations on a treaty to prepare for future pandemics to avoid mistakes similar to those made during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Next year gives us a unique opportunity to address these problems,” emphasized the head of WHO, an organization that celebrated its 75th anniversary this year.
