Dream Chaser Spacecraft: A Revolution in ISS Procurement for NASA

Space ship NASA’s Dream Catcher And Sierra Space A demonstration flight to the ISS is planned for 2024, which will include cargo delivery and various orbital tests to ensure it is ready for future missions.

NASA and Sierra Space are moving toward the first flight of the company’s Dream Chaser spacecraft to the International Space Station. An unmanned cargo spaceplane is planned to launch on a demonstration mission to an orbital complex in 2024 as part of NASA’s commercial resupply services.

Dream Chaser and shooting star

Manufactured by Sierra Space in Louisville, Colorado, the Dream Chaser cargo system consists of two main elements: the Dream Chaser spacecraft and the Shooting Star cargo module. Dream Chaser, a removable-body spacecraft, is designed to be reused up to 15 times and is a modification of the HL-20 spacecraft developed at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

Accompanying the spacecraft’s cargo module, Shooting Star is designed to support the delivery and disposal of pressurized and unpressurized cargo to and from the space station. The cargo module can only be used once and is destroyed before re-entry.

The Dream Chaser system will be launched aboard the ULA (United Launch Alliance) Vulcan Centaur rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at the Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida, with its wings folded into a five-meter fairing. Covering panels will protect the spacecraft during ascent but launch into orbit. Solar panels mounted on the Dream Chaser’s cargo module and wings are deployed during its autonomous rendezvous with the space station. In a bush situation, Dream Chaser will be ready to launch after 24 hours.
