SLIM took the photos after successfully entering lunar orbit. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has released detailed images of the cratered surface of the moon.
The device was launched with JAXA’s X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) on September 6. While XRISM remained in orbit doing its job of studying cosmic X-ray sources, SLIM entered an elliptical orbit and orbited the Moon approximately every 6.4 hours.
The 8.8 meter long device is planned to land on the moon on January 24. If the SLIM moon landing is successful, Japan will be the fifth country after the Soviet Union, the USA, China and India to successfully land the devices on the Earth satellite.
As reported by Ukrinform, on December 25, the Japanese lunar lander SLIM (Intelligent Lander for Exploration of the Moon) entered lunar orbit before landing on the Earth’s satellite.
