On December 30, NASA’s Juno spacecraft will fly past Jupiter’s moon Io at its closest approach in 20 years.

This is stated in the press release of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Ukrinform reports.

“Combining data from this flyby with our previous observations, the Juno science team is examining how volcanoes on Io are changing. “They look at how often they erupt, how bright and hot they are, how the shape of the lava flow changes, and how Io’s activity changes compared to Jupiter,” said Scott, the Juno team’s principal investigator. “We’re looking at how it relates to the flow of charged particles in the magnetosphere,” said Bolton, of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

The NASA probe will get as close as possible to Jupiter’s moon, which is about 1,500 km away.

The second flight of the device over Io is planned for February 3, 2024. Juno will approach Jupiter’s moon to within about 1,500 kilometers.

The spacecraft had previously observed volcanic activity on Io at a distance of more than 11,000 to 100,000 kilometers and transmitted the satellite’s first photographs of the north and south poles.

The probe also flew close to Jupiter’s icy moons Ganymede and Europa.

As reported by Ukrinform, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Juno space probe took a photo of the vortices near Jupiter’s north pole.
