UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) emphasized that 2023 ‘became deadliest year for children’ in West Bank and Jerusalem in history and assured that “violence associated with the conflict has reached unprecedented levels.”

UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Adele Khodr– he said.

In the last twelve weeks, 83 boys and girls have been killed, more than double the number of boys and girls killed in all of 2022, amid an increase in military operations and the number of (Israeli) police.

“While the world looks at the situation in the Gaza Strip with horror, the children of the West Bank are living in their own nightmare,” Khodr said, stressing that “living with an almost constant sense of fear and pain is, unfortunately, all too common among sick children.”

Later the regional director regretted it.

Many say fear has become part of their daily lives and that they are afraid to even go to school or play outside due to the threat of gunfire and other conflict-related violence.

Additionally, he added that “children living in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have been subjected to devastating violence for many years,” and insisted that “the intensity of this violence has increased dramatically since the horrific attacks on October 7.”

Since the beginning of 2023, 124 Palestinian children and six Israeli children have died as a result of conflict-related violence.

Finally he said

The suffering of children in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, must not be secondary to the current conflict. This is part of it.

A few hours ago, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has warned of a “rapid deterioration” in the human rights situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 7.
