Brooklyn Federal District Court rejects appeal Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman review the 2019 verdict that sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Guzman, who for years led the Sinaloa cartel, which has been blamed for thousands of deaths, filed habeas corpus petitions – civil lawsuits used to evaluate the legality of a prison sentence – and asked for legal representation in the appeal.

Judge Brian Cogan The ruling said it denied the petition.

It was perhaps the most high-profile criminal trial of the decade, and the charges on which the applicant was convicted could well have resulted in the death penalty if not for the conditions of his extradition.

The ruling rejects arguments that Guzman’s defense did not sufficiently examine the plea deal and cites confidential evidence that suggests “El Chapo” still controls billions of dollars in assets, even if they are not in his name.

Kogan, who also presided over Guzman’s trial and sentencing in 2019, rejected a request for legal assistance, saying the convicted man had already received help from Mariel Colon Mir, a lawyer who has represented the drug trafficker and his wife in recent years.

Colon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The judge also questioned where Guzman got the funds to pay his lawyers and why his wife, released from prison in September, did not have access to his assets.

Guzman, 66, is serving a life sentence at a Colorado prison known as the “Alcatraz of the Rockies,” where inmates are held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.

After two escapes from maximum security prisons in Mexico, Guzman was deported to the United States in 2017 and convicted on drug trafficking charges in 2019.
