The Celestis space company is preparing to launch the cremated remains of 47 people from five countries into orbit this week.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to The Byte.

At the direction of the deceased’s relatives, the company is attaching the remains to a telecommunications satellite that will be launched from the Florida coast and will orbit the Earth with it for ten years. Celestis will provide the relatives of the deceased at any time with GPS data on the movement of the satellite so that their location can be tracked.

After the satellite is decommissioned, the remnants will burn with it as it enters the atmosphere.

Before we begin, Celestis organizes a very unusual funeral with 160 guests from all over the world.

Among the cremated are the remains of Marjorie Dufton, who was trained by NASA in the late 1950s – early 1960s to participate in the “Mercury” program from a female crewmember spaceflight. The Mercury program was canceled in 1962, and Dufton never had to go into space, despite his dreams. The woman died tragically in 2020.
