AYANEO Flip brings the Nintendo DS concept to a portable Windows console

AYANEO presented the renewal of its line pervert portable consoles with x86 processor, which stand out because they are foldable (in clamshell configuration). One of the models implements a mini keyboard under the layout we’ve seen many times from GPD, but the other has a dual screen and a design that is quite reminiscent of the Nintendo 3DS.

The new AYANEO Flip was named KB for the model with a keyboard and DS for the model with two screens. They will be launched on January 3, 2024 at least in the Chinese market and can be purchased with the APU Ryzen 7 7840U or Ryzen 7 8840U “Hawk Point.” Both processors are based on Zen 4 for the CPU and RDNA 3 for the integrated graphics, but the latter has an improved XDNA “Ryzen AI” NPU, which is obviously not of much use in this context.

In the rest we find two consoles that have been known about since the Steam Deck went on sale. Despite their availability, the AYANEO Flip are essentially two x86 mini-PCs with an AMD processor, so unless the manufacturer has set some other barrier at the firmware level, these are devices that run Windows normally (it will be pre-installed) and that on paper should support Linux distribution, although the support the kernel may offer at the driver level remains up in the air.

AYANEO Flip

The Nintendo DS has shown through its various variants that having two screens can be very useful and opens the door to new possibilities in terms of gameplay. However, AYANEO Flip will mainly be aimed at running video games built for classic PCs that run on Windows, so we expect that few games will make use of this feature., although it opens the door to quick access to events or displays additional information about the game, among other things. With this on the table, the keyboard model tries to adapt more to the type of software that will be executed.

The AYANEO Flip dual-screen model seems to be primarily an attempt to offer a capable device emulate different generations of Nintendo DS under similar conditions and within a similar framework, but no less, a NASA PC is not required to emulate these consoles. Come on, the AYANEO Flip is more than adequate for the task.

There are many unknowns regarding the features of the future AYANEO Flip consoles, but it is known that the main screen will be seven inches and it seems that it will work with a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. The use of powerful APU models suggests that they will implement a lot of RAM and that at the data storage level they should contain a lot or at least facilitate expansion.
