A Japanese private space company has revealed the lunar lander being built for the new lunar mission in 2024. A new video from ispace showed off the Mission 2 lander, which will house the micro rover that will launch in winter 2024 if all goes as planned.

“Our engineers are working on the propulsion system, main body, and electrical systems of the Resilience Lunar Lander,” ispace officials wrote to X. This will be ispace’s second attempt to land on the moon after a navigation error led to the crash. First trial in 2023.

The new mission, if it reaches the surface, will have a micro rover. It is only 10.24 inches (26 centimeters) high, 12.4 inches (31.5 cm) wide and 21.26 inches (54 cm) long and weighs about 11 pounds (5 kilograms). It will also have a high-resolution camera near the front to capture images of lunar dirt while collecting samples.

This will be ispace’s second attempt to land on the moon, after a navigation error caused the first attempt in 2023 to crash.

The first lunar mission, the Hakuto-R lander, was launched in December 2022 but crashed during an attempt in April. The spacecraft’s onboard computer miscalculated the altitude, causing a crash landing.

Mission 2 is very close to the Hakuto-R lander, which weighs approximately 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). But the new mission includes software and other changes based on what happened during Mission 1, according to ispace.

The name of the lander, Resilience, is consistent with the company’s motto: “Never give up on the search for the Moon.” Will come after mission 2 Task 3Its launch is planned to be held in 2026. This mission will use the Apex 1.0 lunar lander, a larger lander with an estimated payload capacity of 1,100 pounds (500 kg).
