Samsung announces that its CXL storage has been tested and verified in a realistic operating environment using Red Hat software. According to the storage specialist, this opens the door to implementing CXL in classic data centers.

Samsung has its CXL (Compute Express link) Storage tested in a realistic IT environment with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.3. In this context, the memory was detected and Samsung verified read and write commands in Red Hat KVM and Podman environments. This means that the manufacturer’s CXL storage can be easily integrated into data centers without the need for large hardware investments.

Samsung and Red Hat collaborate on CXL integration RHEL 9.3 CXL Storage Activation Guide. This is intended to help users make implementing the additional storage a reality. The two parties believe this breakthrough will enable IaaS and PaaS providers with RHEL environments to deploy CXL more quickly.

Why CXL?

CXL is an open memory standard that allows chips such as CPUs and GPUs access to shared memory. This memory is connected to a system via PCIe and must therefore be slightly inferior to real DDR5 memory in terms of latency and performance, but this is compensated for by the coherence of the shared memory and the immense expansion options via PCIe.
