October 23, 2004 23 people have been killed and more than 500 injured after a series of earthquakes, including one measuring 6.8, rocked northwestern Japan.
March 20, 2005 A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the island of Kyushu, killing one person and injuring 735.
March 25, 2007 A magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook a large coastal area in Ishikawa province, killing one person, injuring 170 and collapsing 44 buildings.
July 16, 2007 Eleven people were killed and more than a thousand were injured in a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Niigata area. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant was closed due to a leak of radioactive water.

June 14, 2008 At least 13 people were killed, ten were missing and 150 were injured after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Sendai.

April 14 and 16, 2016 Two earthquakes measuring 6.5 degrees and another measuring 7.3 degrees respectively struck the Japanese island of Kyushu, killing fifty people and injuring more than a thousand.
