Dell announces 40-inch 5K monitor with “5-star eye comfort.”

The Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor is the first display to be certified for “five-star eye comfort” by TÜV Rheinland.

After LG, Dell is also announcing all of its new monitors before CES 2024 officially begins next week. The top model is the Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub (U4025QW), quite a treat for what should be the manufacturer’s top model.

According to Dell, the most important advantage is that the 40-inch screen was the first to be certified by TÜV Rheinland with five stars for eye comfort. This was achieved by integrating various features into the monitor:

  • A refresh rate of 120 Hz, twice the standard 60 Hz, for smoother animations
  • Automatic dimming or more brightness thanks to the integrated light sensor
  • Adjusting the color temperature to the lighting conditions
  • 35 percent reduction in blue light thanks to the new ComfortView Plus LED technology

In addition to the 40-inch screen, Dell is also launching a 34-inch variant (U3425WE) for those who have less desk space. It also gets the same five-star rating for eye comfort.

Screen quality and connectivity

Eye comfort is one thing, but both monitors also score points when it comes to connectivity and screen quality. According to the manufacturer, the Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub can display 99 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. The 5K panel (5,120 x 2,160 pixels) is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified and offers a contrast ratio of 2,000:1 via IPS Black Panel technology.

There is no lack of connectivity. The USB-C monitor can deliver up to 140 watts of power via Thunderbolt 4. All ports are: 1x HDMI (v2.1), 1x DisplayPort (v1.4), 2x USB-C (Thunderbolt 4), 4x USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 2), 1x Ethernet (2.5 GbE) and a Jack connection. On the bottom you can connect three additional ports centrally to connect peripheral devices conveniently and without having to search for a long time. These are 2x USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and 1x USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 2).

The smaller 34-inch version has a WQHD resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), 98 percent DCI-P3 color space and delivers 90 watts of power via USB-C (Thunderbolt 4). The number of ports is identical, except that the three ports on the front are not “clickable” down, but are located on the bottom of the monitor. You have to bend down to know where to put something.

Both monitors will be available in the US starting February 27th. The Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub (U4025QW) costs $2,400 or 2,193 euros excluding VAT. The Dell UltraSharp 34Curved Thunderbolt Hub (U3425WE) costs $1,019, i.e. 931 euros without VAT. It is not yet known whether both monitors will come to Europe and what the euro prices will be there.
