Internet connection: at what speed will I have serious problems

Internet connection speed largely determines the user experience we will enjoy in our daily lives, he notes bandwidth levels which we can reach both up and down. The higher the speed, the higher the maximum bandwidth.

A few years ago, I shared with you a special article focused on reviewing what internet connection speed we need, and today I decided to approach this very interesting topic in a different way, to show you where is the minimum point below which we should never go. so what is the speed of the internet connection which, because it is too low, they will start giving us problems.

The first thing we need to be clear about is the internet connection speed we will need to avoid problems. it will depend on the usage that we make a team and also number of people who use this connection. If more people are connected, the bandwidth needs to be increased because more people will be consuming this resource.

Obviously we don’t even need the same bandwidth for something as simple as sending an email to play streaming and HD content. Based on these simple concepts, and also so important, we are ready to enter the heart of this article, which is to determine the minimums from which we should not go below.

Minimum Internet connection speeds that we should not reduce

Internet speed

  • If we are only going to browse the internet, make video calls and send emails without very heavy attachments we should not go below 2 Mbps for each connected user on the Internet. Dropping it to 1Mbps will seriously affect the experience, so much so that it will take twice as long to connect a file, for example.
  • If we are going to play online, a very fast connection is not necessary, but it should reach at least 5 Mbps downstream and 512 Kbps upstream. They are not the optimal minimum, but the minimum that prevents us from having serious problems in the basic communication that is done while playing. That number is, as I said before, for each connected user.
  • For playback of streaming content, the minimum speed will depend on its quality. So for HD content A speed lower than 5 Mbps can cause us big problems resulting in freezes or a drop in image quality. For higher definition content, the minimum is between 10 Mbps and 20 Mbps, depending on each service and the resolution and final quality. As always, these values are for each connected user.
  • Finally, if we frequently download, upload or attach large files, we will need more bandwidth. In this case, the minimum that will cause us problems It will depend on the weight of those particular files. With an internet connection running at 30 Mbps, we’ll be downloading at 3.75 MB/s, which means a 375 MB file will take one minute to download. one minute and 40 seconds. With a 90 Mbps connection it would only take 33.3 seconds. As a general rule, the minimum should be set to 30 Mbps, a slower connection will greatly slow down the download or upload of any minimally large file.
