Qualcomm announces a new VR/AR chip in response to the Apple Vision Pro

The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 has promising specifications and will be used for the first time in devices from Google and Samsung.

After years of marginal growth in the VR world, Apple wants to take the plunge in 2024. The Vision Pro has impressed since it was announced, but the company is still keeping a lot of secrets behind it. Manufacturers hope Apple will boost the VR/AR market, including Qualcomm.

As a successor to the current one, it is bringing the Snapdragon

The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 supports more than twelve cameras that can help register movements of your body or hands. WiFi 7 is on board, as is a low latency of 12 ms for displaying colored video images in the glasses for AR applications.

Samsung and Google on board

During its presentation just before CES 2024, Qualcomm said the chip will be included in new applications from Google and Samsung. It is currently unclear whether these are VR/AR glasses or something else. The manufacturer also speaks of five other OEMs that will work with the chip, including HTC, Immersed and Play For Dream. Part of the veil could be lifted at the technology fair next week.

If big brands like Google, Samsung and Apple fully support AR/VR this year, the market will be bigger than initially thought and the technology will be ready for it. Will 2024 be the year of AR/VR? Not according to Microsoft. At the end of 2023, the company stopped supporting its mixed reality platform. The platform tried unsuccessfully to gain a foothold for six years.

According to reports, the Apple Vision Pro will ship to the first customers in February. Did the hype train take off from there?
