An international group of scientists has discovered a connection between magnetic fields and dark matter, the matter that makes up most of the mass in our universe. Researchers suggest that one possible mechanism for the formation of magnetic fields is the interaction of the universe with dark matter in the early stages of its development.

Dark matter, which does not directly interact with magnetic fields, may nevertheless serve as a kind of “probe” for their study. Scientists have shown that increasing disturbances in the density of dark matter can lead to the formation of mini galaxies from this matter. The detection of such mini-galaxies could be a confirmation of the original nature of magnetic fields and could help understand the nature of the visible part of the universe.

“Magnetic fields are ubiquitous. One possible theory for their formation suggests that the fields observed today may have formed in the early stages of our universe,” explains study author Pranjal Ralegankar from SISSA.

“However, this proposal lacks the explanation in the standard model of physics. To clarify this issue and find a way to detect “source” magnetic fields, we propose in our work what can be called an “indirect” method. Our approach is based on the question: How do magnetic fields affect dark matter? Directly It is known that there is no interaction, but as Ralegankar explains, there is an indirect situation: through gravity.

It turned out that fluctuations in the density of baryonic matter decreased in this process, but left a trace due to the formation of mini galaxies. These results highlight the hypothesis that magnetic fields appeared very early, in the first moments after the Big Bang.

Ralehankar explains: “In the study, we reveal an unexpected phenomenon. The increase in the density of baryons causes an increase in dark matter perturbations. This causes them to collapse at small scales and form mini-galaxies consisting of dark matter. As a result, although the fluctuations in the density of baryonic matter disappear, mini-galaxies do not form.” “They leave traces like this.”

This research opens a new chapter in understanding the origin and evolution of magnetic fields in space. The discovery of dark matter mini-galaxies could be an important step in unlocking the mystery of the universe’s magnetic fields and helping to better understand how our universe formed and evolved.
