Save the Children reported that on average More than ten boys and girls a day were losing one or both legs in Gaza since the outbreak of the conflict between Hamas and Israel on October 7, 2023.

In just these three months of conflict, more than a thousand children have had one or both legs amputated, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and many of these surgeries were performed without anesthesia due to the shortcomings of Gaza’s healthcare system as a result of Israeli attacks.

“The killing and mutilation of boys and girls are serious violations.”

“The suffering of boys and girls in this conflict is unimaginable, especially since it is unnecessary and completely avoidable.

“This suffering, killing and mutilation of boys and girls constitutes serious violations of childhood, and those responsible must be brought to justice“Said Jason Lee, director of Save the Children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

He stressed that young children caught in explosions are especially vulnerable to serious, life-altering injuries because their bones are not yet fully formed and their muscles are not fully developed.

In addition, the paralysis of the health care system and severe shortages of medical personnel and supplies such as anesthesia and antibiotics meant that responsible medical personnel were completely overwhelmed when children come with injuries from the explosion.

“The impact of children experiencing so much pain and not having the equipment and medications to treat them or relieve their pain is too great even for experienced professionals.

“Even though this is a war zone, the sights and sounds of a small child maimed by bombs cannot be reconciled, much less understood, within the framework of humanity,” Lee said.

“A definitive ceasefire could put an end to the injury and death of civilians.”

In this situation, Save the Children said that only a permanent ceasefire could end the injury and death of civilians and allow humanitarian aid to arrive.

“Unless the international community takes action to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law and prevent the most serious crimes of international concern, history will and must judge us all.

“We must heed the lessons of the past and prevent horrific crimes from occurring.”

More than 22,700 Palestinians have been killed and another 57,000 injured in Israeli attacks, with children maimed and killed at devastating rates and entire families killed daily, according to Gaza’s health ministry. (Europe Press)
